Handheld Insulation Resistance Tester with high accuracy, stable performance and a wide range of functions. The maximum measuring range of Insulation Resistance test is 20 Giga Ohm, and the maximum test voltage is 1000 V. The present insulation resistance tester is not quite usual. The point is that it also possesses the functions of a multimeter and is performed in the form factor of a typical multimeter. So let us have a look.

Let us start our review with the package contents. The tester is supplied in this kind of a cloth case which has the tester itself, a set of measurement leads, and the manual. If we take this device as a multimeter it is rather big. However, as a resistance tester it is extremely portable. The quality is high as usual, and it is rubberized all-around.

A set of measuring leads consists of flexible connecting cables and two types of nozzles. That means that here …. you can attach either this kind of an alligator clip, or (1:20) such a conventional lead; also note that the nozzle here is removable. That is, depending on your needs, you can use either these probes or these.

And now let’s talk briefly about functionality. The device is turned on with the rotary switch; the first three positions are multimeter functions, that is, True RMS AC voltage measurement, DC voltage measurement, and low resistance measuring up to 20 kilo Ohm, in fact these are typical multimeter functions.

Well, next we have mega ohmmeter functions or insulation testing functions, namely, selecting test voltage - 1000 V, 500 V, 250 V, 100 V and 50 V. Well, let’s consider additional features, that is the function of saving and displaying measurement results, which means that when you press the Save button, the measuring results will be saved, and you can have them displayed by pressing the Recall button.

Note that there are several storage locations available, so using the Up / Down buttons, you can view all previously saved results. And there of course is the Hold button – a button for holding data; if you press and hold this button, the display backlight will go on. Well, the Test button is the button of insulation tester measurements; we'll show them later on, and there's also this button – measuring either polarization index or dielectric absorption ratio. I also want to mention the display - it is very big, very informative, and it also has an analog bar graph.

Well, and now we measure the insulation resistance between the conductors of this AC cable. For this purpose, I already have alligator clips here and we will be connecting to each of the conductors. Done. Now we turn on our device. We will be measuring with the test voltage of 1000 V. Let’s turn on the display backlight; the test voltage level can also be changed with the Up and Down buttons, that is, the maximum voltage is 1200 V. Ok, let’s use this value. And click the Test button.

As you can see, the display will show a value above 20 giga Ohm. That is, it tells us that the insulation value is even higher than the measurement range of this instrument, and it also means that the insulation condition is excellent, that is, the cable can be used. Most multimeters have the claimed input resistance voltage of 10 milliohms. So let us now try to measure the input resistance here. So here we have UUNI-T UT70C Multimeter.

I have already turned the switch to measuring DC voltage, which means that the resistance specified is 10 milliohms, and let us connect our insulation tester to the multimeter. Ok, we are connected, the voltage is selected; so we will make the test voltage 1000 V, because the multimeter states that the maximum input voltage is 1000 V, so everything should be fine. And we click the Test button. So as we can see, we have the test voltage of 1046 V. We have the same result on the multimeter, and input resistance, well, in fact is exactly 10 Mega Ohm. That is, the input resistance equals 10 Mega Ohm – that’s the first point, and the second point is that the insulation tester measures it very precisely.

UNI-T UT505A is a high-precision and high-quality insulation tester, which is always at hand because of its compact size. Well, also, do not forget about the functions of the multimeter, which greatly expand the scope of the device use.
